Can my children miss school for a dental appointment?

YES , The State of Texas allows excused abscesses for all doctor appointments with a written note from the Dentist.

ATTENTION SCHOOL PATIENTS

The conference committee on S.B. 1 (The Education Bill) has
adopted language that will help stop the bottleneck of school kids
going to the dentist after school in the afternoon.

Specifically, the new law reads: "A school district shall
excuse a student for a temporary absence resulting from appointments
with health care professionals if that student commences classes or
returns to school on the same day of the appointment. A student
whose absence is excused under this subsection may not be penalized
for that absence. A student whose absence is excused under this
subsection shall be allowed a reasonable time to make up school
work missed on those days. If the student satisfactorily completes
the school work, the day of absence shall be counted as a day of
compulsory attendance." The new education bill went into effect
September 1, 1995..
